L’interview wagon bar : PLUGS

Published on May 18th, 2010

Au début, on avait prévu d’écrire un édito. Vraiment. Et puis on s’est rappelé la dernière visite en France d’un groupe qu’on aime bien. Si je me souviens bien, ça donnait à peu près ça.

Which is the best « The » band in the UK ?
I think the best ‘The’ band in the uk is probably ‘The, The’. I mean i’m a big fan of the band and everything, but i think it’s also pretty cool that they were obviously sat around smoking and drinking, trying to think up a band name, when one of the members probably said ‘why don’t we just call ourselves ‘The,The’. After all the laughter died down somebody was like ‘Actually, that’s not a bad idea’.

I bet you can’t name any good “Le” band in France , can you?
You’re right. All the ‘Le’ bands i know are from America: Le Tigre, Le Savvy Fav…

What’s your favourite Air Guitar song?
My favourite air guitar song is probably Heart of the Sunrise by Yes. The first three minutes of that song (it’s a ten minute prog thing) has the most incredible riffage i’ve ever heard. The use it in the strip club scene in that Vincent Gallo movie Buffalo 66.

What do the British have that French people don’t?
A metro system that doesn’t work.

Best meal : Roast beef + Jelly or Frogs’ legs + Crème Brulée?
You know i think the best meal for me would probaly be all Japanese stuff. I can’t get enough of Sushi and Sashimi. If I could, i’d eat raw fish all day everyday for the rest of my life. It’s just so expensive dude!!!!

Gainsbourg or Morrissey?
Can’t I have them both? Hmmm that’s really difficult…I’m gonna have to go with Morrisey because I know more of his songs. I now Gainsbourg is a genius as well, but i’d feel like a fake because I can’t actually quote any of his lyrics to you except for ‘J’taime’ and that’s not really a lyric, it’s more of a word, right?

Who is the Britishest person in the world? The Frenchest?
You know that’s a hard one. I guess the Britishest person in the world would be somebody i could imagine wearing union jack underwear. I can only think of really old comedians like Les Dawson, or Russ Abbot or something. Actually, everybody seems incredibly british when you see them in another country. Like if I meet one other British person amongst a group of Americans when I’m in America, they suddenly seem to embody everything about Britain that I’m missing. Also the further away from Britain i go, the more British i become. So i guess it’s all about context. The most British person i know could be me, as long as I’m somewhere that feels far from home. Like if somebody dropped me off in south central LA i’d probably feel like Hugh Grant.
The frenchest person in the world, if we use my idea of somebody appearing more like a stereotype the further they go from home, would be Jean Reno maybe. I know, I know, you’d probably expect me to say Alain Delon or something, or maybe Gerard Depardieu. But Jean Reno is in all those blockbuster hollywood action movies surrounded by a bunch of ‘all American’ actors and they just make him stand out. If you see him in the Big Blue then it doesn’t work. You have to watch him in Leon or Mission Impossible.

How would you describe a British kiss?
Like a french one only with a stiff upper lip. No just kidding. Kissing’s the same all over the world. It’s all about how you use your lips, apparently.

Please describe London in three words?
Fun, Fun , Fun.
